The Road Ahead

Lewis quoteSeveral people who have watched my seasonal plays, came up to me after my most recent Christmas production – The Ripple Effect and said: “That was the best one you’ve done”. To which I responded with: “The best is yet to come”.  This motivates me to work harder and get better. No matter what you do or who you are – that should always be the goal – to get better, be better and strive for excellence as we travel on this road called life. And remember, as you travel, to enjoy the good moments.

If I look back at a script I wrote 3 years ago and compare it to something I wrote today, I recognize that I have come a long way and I have much more road to travel. ..and it’s exciting….the future is filled with amazing possibilities.

In 2015 I did the most writing in a year then any other year. It was a productive year, filled with great opportunities. And I believe it is a springboard for what’s to come.

2015 began in January with the writing of my play Overtime. Overtime went OT Birdthrough a few drafts and much tweaking during the rehearsal process.   The play was performed at the Toronto Fringe Festival from July 2-15.   With Overtime, I wish I had more time to workshop the script with the actors and I wish the actors had more time in the rehearsal process. But in the end, it was great fun to see it come to life on stage. I look forward to revising this play, as it is a solid story with complex characters.

Mercy & Love WebRotateMercy & Love was put together in 7 weeks from the point I began the script to the moment it was performed for Easter on March 29.   The rehearsal period was quick and before we all realized it, the play was performed and done.

During the months of April to July, I re-wrote 2 of my screenplays. One was Play Ball for producer Pat Patterson. Play Ball (which is now titled THE LAST PITCH), is a screenplay that won me the Kairos Prize in Screenwriting back in 2013. Pat hopes to go before the cameras in the spring of 2016.

I also rewrote my screenplay Who is Molly Steele? This script was a finalist in the Chronos Prize for Screenwriting back in February and has generated some interest; so much so that I’m confident Molly Steele will be officially optioned in 2016. Stay tuned.

Ripple Effect WebRotate-1In July and August I wrote The Ripple Effect – my latest production that was performed on December 12 and 13. As I said in my blog last month, this play was not an easy journey and it proved to be one of the more difficult creative experiences I’ve been involved with. But in the end, the acting, the set, the technical elements and the music all came together despite the struggle it took.

Before the year ended, I wrote a new screenplay called The Great Surrender. I began writing this script in August and concluded it in late November. I have entered The Great Surrender in screenplay competitions and expect it to do very well.  The story of love, loss, faith and miracles flowed out of me and it came together in such searing clarity.

And so that brings me to today – January 1, 2016. I believe that the best is yet to come, that C.S. Lewis is spot on when he said, “there are far, far better things ahead”.

    Hey Romeo,

In spite of the challenges you faced with bringing to life some of your projects, look how much success you have experienced overall! And with more opportunities to look ahead to in the coming year! It would serve us all well to pause and reflect on recent blessings, even though there were difficult moments along the way. That can help us look forward to the “better things”. Thanks for the positive take on the upcoming year.

  2. Hey Romeo –
Thanks for the reminder of whats ahead if we just keep pressing onward and upward!
