This Is Why I Do What I Do

When Blue opened a couple days ago to a decent size house, I sat at the back of the theatre, watching the audience take in my play. A wave of incredible emotion swept through me as the last five years flashed before my eyes. I thought about when it all began and how Blue came to be. Half way through the first act, I started feeling more and more anxious. What have I done? Is this any good? Will anyone care? All the self-doubts began to overwhelm and I found it difficult just to enjoy the play. I eventually did and after last night’s third performance, I’m discovering more and more that many audience members are profoundly moved.

Two people stick out in my mind following last night’s show. A gentleman came up to me and was overwhelmed with the play and how it drew him into these characters lives. He congratulated me on a fine piece of writing and he was busting with emotion. Speaking of emotions, Bryn (who plays Gloria) waved me over to her where she introduced me to one of her friends. This young lady was so touched by the play, her eyes watered up and she didn’t have much to say except that she really liked it and needed some time to process what she just witnessed. I talked a bit about the play, but I could tell that her emotions were getting the best of.

Wow…this is why I do what I do. To be able to affect a person’s life in such a deep and sensitive way is beyond satisfying. Themes of loss and hope as expressed by the characters resonate far beyond when audiences leave the theatre. Another friend who came opening night, brought a friend of his and told me that the next day, his friend left a message on his machine thanking him for inviting her out to the play. She was still thinking about Blue the following morning.

These are just a few stories of the last three performances and I’m sure there will be more to come. I have been personally overwhelmed and beyond pleased with the outpour of support Blue has received. If you have not seen it, there are still 4 performances left, so get out there and support some solid independently produced theatre. It is well worth the price of admission.

From Facebook, here are some comments from audience who have seen the show…

“Fantastic show. I thought the story was totally awesome and powerful. The best original play that I’ve seen in the last 5 years.”

-Jason Cleveland

“Went last night with the TDChristian staff and I’m so glad that I did. I’m trying to figure out how to arrange babysitting so I can go again – this time with my wife. Lines were nearly seamless, and the characters were absorbing and engaging. Bravo!”

-David Robinson

“This story of human reckoning is absorbing, fun with some unexpected twists. Very much worth attending.”

-Michelle Burridge

“Well, I can sum up what I saw tonight in one word. WOW. I was completely taken on a really powerful little trip. Your actors, Jane, were on FIRE and had me laughing and crying and accidentally kicking the people in front of me, whatever I don’t know them — and what the hell! Fantastic. WOW.”
