Signs & Wonders

Gavin Hopper is a counselor who one day takes his wife on a horseback adventure to celebrate their wedding anniversary.  Tragedy strikes when Gavin’s wife, Elizabeth, is tossed off her horse and sent into a coma.  Five years later, Elizabeth remains in a coma and the Hopper’s son, Dylan, is about to marry.  Dylan is a unique boy, born with legs rendering him unable to walk on his own.  He must use the aid of two canes wherever he goes.

Gavin begins experiencing strange things when he starts hearing voices and seeing a horse and Knight appear before him. To help make sense of these visions, he confides in Rueben Carter.  Reuben’s a trumpet playing homeless man who lost his son in a pool accident years earlier.  Despite his tragic past, Reuben’s a preacher of sorts, reciting Bible verses and prophesying truths.  One of the verses Reuben shares with Gavin has a particularly profound effect and becomes a catalyst in Gavin’s journey: “But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently”.

A series of unusual events occur: Dylan’s fiancée dumps him at the altar, leaving him devastated and Gavin is led back to the ranch where his wife had the accident.  During his visit to the ranch, he meets Scarlet Whitmore and her father, Charlie.  Charlie suffers from Alzheimer’s.  He loves horses and seems to have unique insights into Gavin’s life similar to his homeless friend, Rueben.  They form a friendship and Gavin invites them out to his house where they meet Gavin’s son.  Dylan’s spirits have been crushed and their presence in his life helps in the healing.

When Gavin is brought back to the ranch a second time, the lives of these individuals and everything Gavin has heard, seen and been told begin to intersect with extraordinary clarity.  This ranch connects Gavin to that fateful horseback ride he shared with his wife Elizabeth five years earlier.  It is at this ranch where the pieces of this puzzle come together: his son, Dylan, is given a new love in Scarlet and Gavin is miraculously reunited with his.
