Follow the Yellow Brick Road

My screenplay WHO IS MOLLY STEELE? made the Quarter-finalist of the Page International Screenwriting Awards.  The above is just a tiny sample of the scripts that advanced.  Page receives screenplays all around the world.  Their awards are split into several genre categories.  MOLLY competes in the Family Category where appropriately 75 other scripts advanced.  There has already been three rounds of competition at this point with the third round representing all scripts that advanced.  I have complied a slew of images below that paint a picture of what it means to reach the Quarter-finals:

“Follow the yellow brick road….”  I’m sure you’ve heard that famous line in the classic movie The Wizard of Oz.  I’ve been thinking about that phrase lately and what it means.  In doing my research, the phrase could symbolize self-discovery, growth, transformation as well as forging a pathway to success, happiness and self full-filament.  For Dorothy, to follow the yellow brick road was a way to get back to Kansas where her home is… because for her, “there’s no place like home”.

And then it got me thinking, maybe that’s all of us.  “Home” is on that yellow brick road and that can represent so many different ideas: a place, a partner, friends, a career, a passion that is all these things tied together.  That’s Home for me.  I definitely think of my family and where I grew up and my closest friends.  It is also the act of writing.  And right now, that act of writing is tough.   But who says finding “home” is easy?  I’m working on a new play called THE ROCKER and I’m feeling stumped, unfocused and lost.  I’m on that yellow brick road and it is a mighty struggle to truly discover where I’m going.  This growth is slow on this play.  I don’t feel at all like I’m at home – this is foreign land to me.

But I know I must persevere, because when I tap into that realm of writing where ideas flow, and things come together and click, then I begin to feel home again.  Until then, I must keep on that path like Dorothy did, no matter what obstacles may come my way (you know, like a wicked witch throwing fire balls at you).

And so, if you feel a little homeless right now, you are certainly not alone.  Don’t be discouraged.  Get back on that yellow brick road.  It takes work, but I truly believe, as long as we have breath we have hope to find a place called home.

  3. Congratulations, Romeo. I’m praying you make it to the next round. But I whole-heartedly agree with you. Home is not always an easy place to be found, especially if we’ve gotten off track. But as I’ve observed you over the years, I’ve been incredibly impressed with your courage to keep on keeping on and your perseverance to follow the road to where it leads. Praying that you never give up finding home!
