Today and Tomorrow

Today brings some good news, but before I share it, I want to talk about what it often takes to be a writer.   The Nicholl Fellowship is the most prestigious competition for screenwriters.  The competition began in the early 1990’s and since its inception, I have entered 20 scripts.  Some of these scripts were re-writes of old drafts, but never-the-less, 20 scripts were sent to Nicholl.  In my mind, I thought surely I’ve probably entered more scripts than anyone else has.   Well I was wrong and it made me smile.   One of last year’s winners was Michael Werwie and if you are curious to know what it takes to be a writer and STAY a writer, watch his acceptance speech.

Over a 15 year period Michael has entered 29 scripts in the Nicholl Fellowship.  29 scripts!  And finally, in 2012, out of 7000 script entries, Michael’s hard work paid off.  He was one of 5 winners.   To Michael Werwie I say bravo and tip my hat to you.

Many, many people over the years have said to me to keep at writing.  One day I will win something big and be on my way.   None of us know the future, we can only hope and continue to persist along the way.   And the fact of the matter is I have been on my way for many years despite the crushing disappointment that often comes.  I remind myself that no matter what happens, writing will always be there.  The bottom line is, do what you love and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.  If you don’t know what you love, there is no easy solution to that, just like there are no easy steps to a great script.   There are no shortcuts, only obstacles.   Life is short but don’t ever forget that it’s a journey.  Where you are today could look very different  tomorrow.

I believe my tomorrows will be filled with great things.   Which brings me to now; I found out today that I am one of 55 semi-finalist in the Kairos Prizes in Screenwriting with my script Play Ball.   I was one of only 2 Canadians to make this cut.   Check out my name in the SEMI-FINALIST LIST.

Kairos has not only significant prizes for the top 3 writers, but lots of exposure for the winners.   I have been a semi-finalist twice before in this competition and once a finalist (top 12).    So today I rejoice for the hope that I will be one of the finalists come February.

Michal Werwie kept writing.  He did not know what tomorrow would bring.   He only knew he liked to write.  That’s where it starts.
