What do you feel/see when you look at the poster above? What word(s) pop into your mind? Jump to the comment section below, and give me your impressions. You don’t need to write a paragraph, or even a sentence. Just words.
We are visual creatures and in this day and age of TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, WeChat, Twitter (X), Threads, Youtube, etc… it is difficult to get anyone’s attention. BUT, if you put up something visual, generally speaking, people will stop and look. So again, take a closer look at the poster above, and pass on a word or two or three. There is no right or wrong answer here. The subject line of this blog says it all. “Eye of the beholder” is a matter of personal opinion, subjective – not an objective truth.
I had a friend design this poster for my play WAVES. It took a little back and forth. I had an idea of what I wanted the visuals to say, but I wasn’t 100% clear. I was more certain of the feeling I wanted to convey. Once the different elements were nailed down, the above image emerged and it encapsulates the mood I was after.
I’ve continued to send out WAVES to various theatre companies and competitions. Recently I submitted the play to the following places:
Each of these organizations offer prize money, promotion to the winners and the chance to have your play staged. I’ve heard back from several other competitions and theatres. These results have been mainly rejections. Or the non-rejection when you don’t hear anything. Rejection is a big part of the creative journey. But I want to remind any artist out there, if you feel driven to create, keep sending stuff out, don’t quite. If it’s a play you want to stage, perhaps it’s time to stage it yourself. Take charge. And that is certainly one of the options for WAVES. I’ve been testing the waters, to get a feel if anyone out there sees what I see in this play.
And while I wait and see, I continue to move ahead with my next play – THE ROCKER. I wasn’t planning to outline the whole script. I wanted to do what one of my writer friend’s does, and just write as you go. Old habits die hard. I’m a planner. And there is no right or wrong way to write a script. The important thing is to write. So do what works for you.
One last note about rejection – an anonymous quote – which relates back to the subject line of this blog. I leave it to give encouragement, to believe in yourself and stay true to who you are.
