Music

The time is moving fast.  In one week, Up in the Attic will have its dress rehearsal in front of an audience.  These next 5 rehearsals will bring the cast closer together as we add the technical elements of the show.  Last night I was working with a couple of young musicians who play piano and violin in the show.   It was a treat to see these guys play through the music and add depth to the show.  We worked out their cues and different ways in which the music is played over the drama.

Working with music and composers has been a highlight for me in this show.  There are 3 original pieces of music composed for Attic and it was a pleasure to work with these composers.  I would find samples of music that I liked and that suited each piece and then send it off to each composer. There was a lot of back and forth and some doubt on my part as to what I wanted each piece to sound like.  You want to give each composer freedom to create so that it becomes a true collaboration.

I have always loved the piano.  Had I not been a writer, composing music, playing the piano, would have been a passion of mine.   Instrumental music plays when I write.  It helps me think, clears my mind.   If I can get music in a play, I try to incorporate it.  In Attic, this fusion of drama and music seamlessly fits together.
