The Mind of a Writer

At the recent Academy Awards, actor Robert De Niro gave out the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay (to John Ridley for 12 Years a Slave) and Best Original Screenplay (to Spike Jonze for Her).  Before he gave out the awards, De Niro spoke about writers.    His words (or more specifically, the words he was reading), made me laugh as he sums up the mind of a writer.  If you’re a writer, I’m sure you can relate.  If you’re not a writer, but you’re thinking about writing the next great, novel, play or screenplay, you may want to re-consider…

Speaking of writing,  I am about to embark on two re-writes.   Both scripts have already gone through several drafts.  I had a recent reading of my play Animal about mental illness.  This play is getting close to performance-ready and one more draft should put it in a good place.  My screenplay Twig also needs another draft, although I have sent this draft out to various competitions and I’m waiting to hear how it places.  I recently wrote a one-act play centred on the theme of Easter.  The play is called Black/White and I’m currently in rehearsals for it.  Black/White will be performed on Sunday April 13.

Alright, enough procrastination.  I guess I should write…

Hey Romeo, always great to read your blogs when I need inspiration to keep writing:) I laughed out loud at DeNiro’s words being so dead on, and like Linda, I wonder who wrote them. In my case, I have to add a possible future dance with diabetes if I don’t lay off the chocolate cake and endless bags of potato chips when having a bad day in or out of the “chair”. God bless…

  2. I laughed out loud when I read the words De Niro was reading! I guess I laughed because I have come to know you more through working with you over the years, and have gained a sense of how challenging writing can be. It makes me wonder who wrote the words De Niro read.

It doesn’t matter whether your play is a one person act or a whole group, your plays are always outstanding. I cannot wait to see the new one!
