Virtual

Two virtual readings of my play ANIMAL happened with these fine folks this past mouth.  A big thank you to all of them for their contributions which went a long way in helping with the re-writing process.  The above group – Pamela Barker, Kevin Aichele, Steven Pereira, Jillian Rees-Brown, Robert Ouellette – read the latest and newest draft in mid September.

This group above read the play in mid- August – Liz Best, Pamela Barker, Paul King, Steven Pereira, Leslie-Ann Walcott, Rick Jones – and it was after their reading that I felt the play needed major trimming.  Between this reading and the reading in September nearly 20 pages of script were cut.  The August reading dragged and I felt the play was losing energy by the final scene.

Back in December (2019) pre-Covid when we were still meeting and gathering, I posted this photo above.  This troupe –   John Shubat, Pamela Barker, Me, Rick Jones, Bronson Lake and Jillian Rees-Brow were the first actors to read a new draft of ANIMAL after extensive re-writes from when the play was performed at the Alumnae Theatre (November 2018).  How times have changed since taking this photo.  I remember distinctly hugging many of these actors.   Now, for the time being, we’re all having to readjust to a new reality.

The reading in December began the snowball effect of the readings that took place this past month.   I’m continuing to listen to advice and take in different opinions.  I realize in all these re-writes that you can never please everyone, but as a writer, one must be open and honest about the work.   And so we carry on….even in doubt….and I’ve had my share of doubt about my ability and the struggle to focus this past year.   I’m sure I’m not alone.   Carry on everyone.  Don’t beat yourselves up.  Just do your best.

My next task is re-writing two of my screenplays (BREAK AWAY and LET IT SHINE) and then,  write a new film script.  It’s time – because in these seemingly uncertain times of pandemics and political upheaval, ideas are ever flowing and they need words to express themselves.   Until then, I leave you with one last glimpse of summer…me laughing…I do a lot of that…you should too….it’s a form of sanity…Best!

Keep smiling Romeo. It will spill over into your rewriting of the plays. Each time you hear the plays being read, other ideas will pop into your head. It will be amazing what you end up with your rewriting of each play.

  2. Wonderful to see these pictures, Romeo, and the last one of you framed by soft green vegetation and black-eyed susans. Wow, a lot of rewrites and readings, but all will be in aid of a great new script of Animal. Excited to hear you’re working on rewrites of Break Away and Let It Shine – they are already great stories of transformation and hope. And yes, laughing is good!
